Sell Gold in Berlin: what to expect, in plain English

If you want to sell gold in Berlin and German is not your first language, the process can feel opaque: unfamiliar hallmarks, unfamiliar rules, and no clear sense of whether the number you are offered is fair. It does not have to be. This page explains, in English, exactly how a gold purchase works at our shop in Berlin-Charlottenburg: how we test, how we weigh, how the price is calculated, and what identification you need. You are welcome to walk in and ask questions before deciding anything.

How we work out what to pay when you sell gold in Berlin

The calculation has three parts and nothing else: the purity of your item, its weight, and the gold price on the day you visit. A chain marked 585 is 58.5 percent pure gold, 750 is 75 percent, and 333 is roughly one third. Only the pure gold content is paid for, not the total weight, because the rest of the alloy is copper, silver or palladium. We weigh in front of you and show the arithmetic, so you can check it yourself or compare it with another offer. There is no fixed price list, because the market price changes every trading day.

Testing without damage: X-ray instead of acid

Many places still test gold by scratching it on a stone and applying acid. That leaves a visible mark and only gives an approximate answer. We use a Fischer XRAY 250 X-ray fluorescence analyser, which reads the composition of the alloy without cutting, scratching or heating anything. Your item leaves exactly as it arrived. This matters if you are only there for a valuation and have not decided whether to sell. It also matters when a piece has no hallmark at all, which is common with jewellery bought abroad, because then measurement is the only reliable answer.

What you can bring and what you need with you

Jewellery, broken chains, single earrings, coins, bars, and dental gold are all fine, and so are damaged pieces, because condition does not affect the metal content. Do not clean anything: polishing can make hallmarks unreadable and removes material. Bring identification if you expect the total to exceed 1,999.99 euros, as German law requires identification above that threshold; below it, a purchase can be made anonymously if you prefer. If you are visiting Berlin and only carry a passport, that is fine. Payment is in cash, immediately, once we agree.

Where to sell gold in Berlin: finding us

We are a specialist shop at Wielandstraße 43, on the corner of Kantstraße, in Berlin-Charlottenburg, a short walk from Savignyplatz. We are not a pawn shop and not a mobile buyer: this is a fixed address with its own testing equipment, which is why we can show you the measurement rather than ask you to trust a number. No appointment is needed. If you would rather get a rough idea before travelling across the city, the live calculator on this page gives you an estimate from purity and weight.

Tax, receipts and the questions people actually ask

In Germany, profit on physical gold held for more than twelve months is free of income tax. Sold within twelve months, it counts as a private disposal and an annual exemption limit of 1,000 euros applies to all such transactions combined. We are not tax advisers and do not give tax advice, but we will issue a receipt for the purchase for your records. If your situation is complicated, a German tax adviser can give you a binding answer. Everything else, how the price is formed and how we test, we will explain in as much detail as you want.
